RAILA TALKS ABOUT IEBC FAILURE IN UK

CORD leader Raila Odinga has taken the discussion on getting rid of the current Kenya's electoral body a notch higher in United Kingdom where he had gone to deliver a lecture at Catham House on "The Importance of Democracy in Africa;Kenya's Experience".This was on the sidelines of the crowing of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Party US presidential candidate.
The former premier utilized the international platform to criticize the country's levels of democracy saying they have been orchestrated by the lack of an accountable Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC).Putting Kenya among other African nations with struggling democracies, Raila said despite regular multi-party elections, there is still no direct translation to good governance and respect for rule and law and freedoms.
The opposition doyen further put the international community on the spot saying they are mandated to protect democracy in African nations.
"These efforts (on democracy) in Kenya and elsewhere in Africa need the backing of all forces that believe in democracy," said Raila. He added: "They require that the US and the
EU must do more for democracy; fight corruption, defend Internet freedom and media freedom and protect democracy activists.
The CORD bigwig said that since the numerous multiparty election have not yielded much, there is need to focus on building more free societies, create clear cut of separation of powers, independence of the media and the judiciary, devolution of power and resources, restriction on presidential power and also respect for term limits.
Referencing on countries like Senegal, Djibouti Rwanda, and Malawi whose economic growth rate is above six per cent above Kenya's, Raila noted that countries that have adopted accountable and democratic governance systems have made strides on the social and economic front.
"These countries are reaping the democracy dividend that ensures sound management of public resources and political stability through regular, credible elections and peaceful and predictable transfers of power," Raila said.
Raila said Kenya (and Africa at large) has become a country where elections are being
viewed on how peaceful they are and not how free and fair they should be: "The performance of incumbents is getting judged by how they can be used to fight terrorism no matter the human rights abuses that accompany the fight and the economic gains that come with doing business with those regimes."
He warned that despite all the gains a country might have made, just one electoral cycle is enough to wipe it all out.
"After 2007, Kenya was suddenly thrust into a political crisis following a botched election. From an 8 per cent annual rate of growth, we dropped to a miserable 2 per cent in 2008 after the post-election violence," said the CORD leader. "That is why since 2013, Kenya's Opposition has demanded fundamental reforms to the electoral infrastructure as the surest way to safeguard democracy," he added.
Raila said his team is pursuing reforms to the system of voter registration, the counting of the votes, result transmission, and announcement of the results.
"We are pushing an electoral body that operates in a truly open and transparent manner with an obligation of complete disclosure of all its operations in the conduct and management of elections," said Raila.

MOI UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR’S SPEECH BRIEFINGS.

By Kennedy Mwikali

The chancellor of Moi University, Mrs Mary addressed the students of Moi main campus on Friday 22nd July 22, 2016. She is the 3rd vice chancellor of the institution and has been awarded several times in the medicine profession. Her short life in school left everyone inspired for stating that she used to be nicknamed the ‘temperature measure’ for walking around barefooted but she made it .

First and foremost, she gave a brief history of the university. She mentioned some personalities such as Ole Kiapi, Omar, Senator of Mombasa county who have made it from this institution to encourage comrades to choose role models wisely. She stated that the institution has the most schools compared to other universities. She also echoed the words said by the currently elected the assistant secretary general in the 30th students governing council, comrades Lastborn -‘Democracy is not democracy without peace. She gave an example of the institution being the mother of Kabianga University, Maasai Mara University and University of Eldoret among others by encouraging comrades to build up others as they strive to build up themselves and the each day demanding success.

Having a PHD in medicine profession, she stressed much on the health of the comrades by the following health tips;
Urged them to eat meat and other fatty foodstuffs moderately.
Eat vegetables to promote their body functions.

Avoid alcoholic drinks at all cost for it can be your friend or enemy. Alcohol-[mind destroyer]
Sleep at least 7 to 8 hours.

The power failure I thought cut short her speech and raised the comrade’s anxiety. Hesitating on my thought that she would comment on the same but to no avail, made most of them drop their expectations of their problems solved.

Moi University Students Elect New Leaders in Peaceful Election

By Jemedari Mwanawakiume

Every institution bases some of its success on the development and incorporation of a strong leadership team that can steer it to success. For universities, the student leadership body is a critical team that stands in to represent the student’s needs and enables the institution staff and management better serve learners.

Unlike many institutions of higher learning whose elections have been marred with violence and unrest, Moi University once again proved its maturity in conducting students' elections for the academic year 2016/2017. In the hotly contested elections, a huge surprise was witnessed in the winners list, as most of the candidates were definitely favourites of students.

Following a thorough and well planned student election, the Moi University students were provided the opportunity to elect a fresh team of leaders to form the Moi University Students Organization (MUSO) and provide leadership to the growing student base.

The university selected an electoral body that structured the nomination and vetting process in a way geared to engage serious contenders who are disciplined, doing well in their studies and able to stand in for their fellow students, even as their leadership skills are developed and nurtured.

The peaceful election held at the university main campus saw the much talked Mr. Towett declared the winner and new MUSO President after garnering in excess of 2260 votes, the highest number of votes for any presidential candidate since Inception of MUSO. This ensured he is declared a winner against other candidates, Rathore and Nthiwa. Mr. Towett, a soft spoken gentleman, who is described by many as a humble and brilliant seemed to be the favourite of many, if his famous movement is anything to go by.

In other top seats Lavinna Samini was elected the Vice President, a post hotly contested too, with major opposition from Faith Muthoni, former School of Arts and Social Sciences Secretary General Mwalo Remmy Wayne managed to beat other contenders of MUSO Secretary General position while Festus Koech (Last born), who was the favourite in the race of assistant, clinched the Assistant Secretary General position.

Commenting on the election, member of the Student Electoral Body were pleased with the students’ discipline and commitment in using their democratic right to elect the leaders of their choice and championed the management for the support provided to run the successful election.

“It went very well and students were able to cast their vote leaders of their choice in a very peaceful election,”  said one student, adding,“we salute all the aspirants for running great campaigns and congratulate all the winners. We believe they will serve the student’s diligently.”

Commenting on his win, Towett expressed his gratitude to all those who elected him President and assured the students that he is up to task and will deliver on the promises he made to the MUSO fraternity during the campaign period.

Here is a full list of those who will form the MUSO:

JOHN AND BRENDA’S “KEEP LEFT” TRAGEDY

Greg Adero
They held hands partially and walked along the streets. Their lips locked periodically and giggling was all people could hear. All the way from Stage to Hostel H .People wanted to be like them. They had been like this for almost 2 years now. John* and Brenda* were both second years. Their behavior too was universal.

On that day, his roommate left and freedom could be heard screaming into the ears of John, finally he had exiled him. This was what he looked forward to all his time. Kisses as usual, a little giggling here and there. It was worth of a time. A look at them would make one faint with toxicity of jealousy in their blood.

This evening, they had made up their minds to go for it, for what they had yearned for. That moment when John would go into her and deliver her into the world of assumptions and sweet dreams. It could be seen in their faces that though in a shorter time, they accomplished their mission. Dead silence.

After two weeks, I found myself within their lives. I couldn’t tell who they were but i could hear their voices suddenly rising and lowering in tones. Early the next morning, a tragedy erupted, as i played as usual something hit me from within. I found myself calm, could not play anymore and almost still. I didn’t know what happened but after close to five weeks i got back my energy. I could hear a sweet nice voice always singing on the background. I thought I knew the owner but couldn't tell.

It was early in the morning as am told, a day like today when I found myself on earth. As soon as my umbilical cord was cut and detached and my cry was hard, I had known the owner of the voice i used to hear. It was Brenda’s, my beloved mother. I was yet to know that she had endured a lot more. After weeks and months of growth, stories started flowing and I got to know my dad. John had become a drunkard.

On the go was that, John had ordered Brenda to get rid of me as soon he found out that I was the ultimate price. The moment I had something hit me was because of his forceful tact which ended up with Brenda receiving blows and kicks from all corners of her abdomen…God’s grace prevailed and my mother survived.

Months passed and another year rolled. I remember that day, it was the last day of their studies. Mother had done all to make sure that I survived. Father always came in seldom and empty-handed though they still smiled. This day though was a different one, from the graduation square. There was silence till we reached at the KEEP LEFT signboard. Dad closely turned to my mother, looked at me and a booming voice was all I heard. I had dozed off but when I woke up, each was clinging unto one of my arm trying to pull me from the other person. I cried while calling my sweet mother in tears. She had broken down and father kicked her and took me away. We left her rolling and crying along the highway. Onlookers stayed from a distance.

We traveled close to 2hrs in complete silence and only my cries could be heard. I thought to myself and for a moment heard the songs my mother used to sing ring in my ears. I thought of how sweet she used to be and swallowed saliva bitterly knowing that I will never see her again. All of a sudden, people's faces frowned and cry erupted, before i could tell what was happening, my eyes saw a “keep left” road sign and into a long ditch people fell. An accident of the worst kind had happened and dad was among those who died. Miraculously, I survived with the thoughts of my mother. I was finally alone in this world.IT ALL ENDED IN THE “KEEP LEFT!”.

This story is dedicated to all those campus ladies who endure the pain of motherhood and love!. A special dedication to all responsible men in campus.

KUCCPS Makes Inter-university Transfer Easier, Online Applications Opened

By The Legacy News Desk

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) officially took over processing of admission of Government Sponsored Students to universities and colleges, which hitherto has been partially the responsibility of the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) formed under the Universities Act No. 42 of 2012.

Unlike JAB which only admitted students to public universities, KUCCPS has the responsibility of placing Government sponsored students to both public and private universities and colleges.

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Board (KUCCPS) is responsible for the placement of government sponsored students to universities and colleges, disseminating information on available programmes, their costs and areas of study as prioritized by the government.

The placement service is in charge of developing career programmes for students as well as collecting and retaining data relating to university and college placement. At the same time, KUCCPS is tasked with advising the government on matters relating to university and college students placement as well as performing any other functions assigned to it under the act.

KUCCPS has developed an online system which will make easy the process of inter university transfer in the country. Students will now be able to apply for inter university transfer via KUCCPS online application system.

Online-Inter-University transfer forms were made available as from 11 July, 2016. The forms will be made available for a period of two months.
The following are steps to facilitate Inter- University transfer in KUCCPS online system.

STEPS

1. Fill the form online, if the applicant qualifies, then he/she will download the form.

2. The applicant will then approach the institution which offers the Degree programme of interest to request for consideration and approval.

3. After securing the Approval to pursue the programme, the applicant will approach the University admitted for release.

4. The applicant submits the duly completed inter-University transfer form to KUCCPS for processing, after endorsement from both institutions.

Student politics: How to get ahead in student politics

The world of student politics is not for the faint hearted. It is vicious precisely because the stakes are so small.

Many believe university politics can offer a route to that small house in a hill-state house.

It is better, instead, to view it as a path to an impressive CV. To lead is a noble thing, and student politics will teach you vital life skills.

If you are still determined to climb the greasy pole of student politics, here are a few handy pointers:

Make yourself known

You will need to be a big name on campus. Good politicians, real and student alike, are well-liked – or at least cultivate an aura of likeability. Personal friendship is the backbone of any student campaign.

Believe in what you’re selling...

Do not blatantly prostitute yourself out – make sure you actually like what you are standing for, and enjoy meeting the people you’re trying to win over. If you fake it, they’ll hate it.

... but leave your ideals at home

That said, you’ve got to be in it to win it. You won’t gain election armed only with well-meaning ideals – know your audience, know the various political tribes, and find the route of least resistance to bring the necessary majority to a point of common agreement. Sounds cynical, but it works.

Harness the machine

Elections at any level require building a dedicated team. Remember, you will be up against people who’ve planned out their university politics career from matriculation to graduation. It doesn’t hurt to butter up the student newspaper editors either.

Keep your hands clean

Don’t get dirty – allow others to do so. Mudslinging and shadowy tactics are inevitable, but as the candidate you have the final say on how dirty your side becomes. In our time at campus there were cases of industrial sealant being used to block an opponent’s door, a candidate ringing up their opponent’s mobile phone company claiming their phone had been stolen, and instances of bugging the opposition’s meetings. Sadly on one such occasion the party being spied upon discovered the device, and found upon it recordings of the would-be spy’s own meetings. Best just to keep your hands clean.

If you’re an all things fashion enthusiast who follows the latest trends from the fashion runways and style influencers, then you will concur when I say that some prints are enduring, seasonless and never go out of style.

And even if they go out of style, they are cyclical; always come back with a bang! These classic prints, if worn and paired with the right pieces are always chic especially when worn as separates.
It’s important to mention though that it’s always safe not to overdo prints so as to avoid looking too matchy-matchy in a clown-y way.

Here are classic prints that never go out of style:

Here’s What 100 Years Of Handbag Trends Look Like In 2 Minutes

By JEMEDARI MWANAWAKIUME

Handbags are like our BFFs. We take them with us everywhere we go.

But did you know that the big bags we carry nowadays were not always the chic looking bags that they are today?

Perhaps the best video yet by Mode’s 100 Years Of Style, we see the bags evolving in terms of designs, shape, size and fabric used to make them; from tiny bags, made of lace and other colorful fabrics to the leather bags we currently know of.

What’s even more interesting is the evolution of the bag contents. Throughout the years, the handkerchief has evolved in terms of patterns, we also see women beginning to put makeup on as we inch towards the 80s and listening to music by carrying radio tapes, we also see them becoming more independent as the years go by, by carrying money, car keys, attending concerts, taking photographs and becoming more fashion forward by wearing sunglasses and carrying designer perfumes.

KALE-LUYHA

Na SIMIYU wanyonyi

Hauchi hauchi unakucha.

Muungano wao ukaitwa, KALE-LUYHA.
- Katibu mkuu (sec gen) =Mwalo Remmy (COWESA)
- naibu wa mwenyekiti (VC) =Lavinah Samini(COWESA)
- mwekahazina(finance director) =Murkomen/Newton (KALENJIN)
- msaidizi wa katibu mkuu(ass sec gen) =Festus (KALENJIN)
- michezo (sports & games) = Esther Wasike(COWESA)
- health = Faith Chimoli( COWESA)

@kaka siwa.......heri kujikwaa kidole kuliko kujikwaa ulimi. Chunga ulimi wako usizae tafrani. Amani amani Amani.

MASHETANI

COWESA - UPPERHILL(we must great)

Nyuma ya Bweni la A(We the people)

Je, ni (we the people) au (We must be great)? Ijumaa ijayo ina jibu ya swali hili.

@kaka siwa____amani idumu. Amani idumu.

Beautiful Ways To Tie Your Pashmina Scarf

    By JEMEDARI Mwanawakiume

Every lady dreads a bad hair day.

With the rains in full effect, you’re bound to run into one of those days when you get drenched under the rain and have no alternative than to take off that weave or braids you made a few days ago.

With no salon open to attend to you as early as 6am, and you don’t have that super sister who happens to be good at everything hair styling inclusive, you’re left with the one and only life-saving piece in your wardrobe. A Pashmina Scarf.

It’s been saving lives as long as I was born. I learned, thanks to my mom LizBeth, how to tie one from a very tender age when it was like mandatory for her to tie her head every Sunday. That alone sends you back into the bedroom to look for it.

There’s one problem, you don’t know how to tie one. You see ladies on the street with stylish turbans and haven’t summoned the nerves to ask them how they achieve it, so you carry on and you’re off to the class/office.

In good health, I’ve got good news, as always I bring you easy saving tips on how to achieve certain looks. And today I’d be sharing 13 amazing  step by step pictures on how to tie your Pashmina Scarf.

Amazing ain’t it?

The Secret to Walking Gracefully In Heels: 7 Tricks That Actually Work

By JEMEDARI Mwanawakiume

When Marilyn Monroe said “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world,” we’re fairly certain she was talking about heels.

But if you can’t walk in said heels? Well, that essentially negates any potential conquests, whether you’re in the boardroom or the bar. Accordingly, we’ve put together the seven secrets to walking in heels the right way.

1.Walk Heel To Toe Not Toe To Heel

The easiest way to look like ungainly in heels is to put your whole foot down at once, as if you’re wearing flats. It may seem obvious to many, but when wearing a high shoe, put your heel down first, followed by your toe. This will make your walk look more natural.

Image: Pinterest.com

2. Take Small Steps

Wearing heels makes your stride shorter than normal, so you’ll have to take an increased number of small steps to go the same distance. Add in a slight wiggle and this can work in any girl’s favour.

Image: Pinterest.com

3. Dont Rush

Trying to walk quickly in heels can not only look awkward but end in disastrous trip or two. Between the smaller steps and the compromised balance, it’s best to take your time in heels. Besides, walking slowly gives off an air of confidence.

heels5

4. Lean Slightly Back

You may find you want to walk faster than your heels will allow, and end up craning your neck to compensate. So allow yourself to lean just the slightest bit back when walking in heels, as this will counteract your inclination to push your torso forward.

heels6

5. Visualize Yourself Walking In A Straight Line

When walking in heels, you’ll walk more gracefully if you look at your goal point (the cafe at the end of the street, for example), and visualise a straight line going toward your end point, rather than staring down at your toes as you walk.

6. Arch Your Foot Slightly

As you take each step, or if you feel yourself slipping, arch your foot slightly to put pressure on the inside of your shoe. This will make your shoe fit closer to your foot, making it easier to manoeuvre.

7. Wear A Shoe That Fits

If your shoes are ill-fitting, it makes the difficult task of walking naturally in heels almost impossible. If your heels are too big, use shoe pads for a better fit. If they are too small, consider having them stretched by a local cobbler, or try this hack to stretch them yourself.

Kenyan Photographer Osborne Macharia Covers Courageous Mau Mau Fighters In Bold Photographic Narrative

Image: Osborne Macharia

There is definitely no better way to tell the stories of your countries’ struggles than through a creative mind.

In this series Macicio, the Kikuyu word for “spectacles,” Kenyan photographer Osbourne Macharia gives us a fictional narrative based on a group of freedom fighters in Kenya that lead a revolt against the British empire in the 1950’s.
Osbourne applies such detail and charisma to the series that it gives you a certain sense of nostalgia and innermost gratitude to the soldiers that were brave enough to stand in our defence in Kenya’s colonial times.
The photographer’s short prologue ascribes context to the photographic narrative:
It tells a story of a special unit of Mau Mau fighters (guerilla freedom fighters during Kenya’s struggle for independence) that was made up of highly skilled opticians who created crude spectacles to identify and eliminate the enemy at night. Little is known about them until now.
The descriptions are based solely on the interpretation of the artist.

General Njuguna

Commander-in-chief of the unit. Fighter since the age of nine. The different stars represent the lives he has saved.

MUSO SI CORD TENA?

By SIMIYU Wanyonyi

Je ni we the people au we must be the great?. Jawabu ni julai hii..
