The A-Z Ladder To Success

  BY CLIFFORD Mulama

Attitude

An attitude is simply the position of the body or way of carrying oneself. Always have a positive attitude towards your studies no matter how hard things may get. Remember, 'attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference' (Winston S. Churchill).

Believe in yourself and potentials

To believe is to accept something as being true. Once you believe that you are an achiever, you will definitely start working towards it come what may. Exhaust all the potential in you with the belief that you will indeed succeed. As Nikos Kazantzakis put it, 'in order to succeed we must first believe that we can. '

Curiosity

Always have that urge to know new concepts every now and then by asking questions in class and doing personal investigations. 'The most important thing is not to stop questioning, curiosity has its own reason for existing.' (Albert Einstein)

Devote

To devote is to give one's time, focus one's effort, commit oneself entirely to a certain matter. In this case, it is devoting to your academics. Once you devote all these to your academic work, there will be no reason as to why you don't succeed eventually. 'To be wholly devoted to some intellectual exercise is to have succeeded in life' (Robert Louis Stevenson)

Exceptionalize

Have a list of the do's and don'ts in your life then exceptionalize them. Exclude factors that may hinder your success and focus on those that add value to your success progress. 'To every rule, there is an exception-and an idiot ready to demonstrate it. Don't be the one. '

Friends

Your friends will always have a supper hand in determining your success. Keep the wrong friends and they will lead you to your downfall, keep the right friends and you will surely succeed. 'Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive' (Anais Nin). If you have the wrong friends then you will have a world of failure and if you keep the right friends then you will have a world of success.

Part 1: Fresher’s Hunters

THE LEGACY MOI UNIVERSITY PUBLICATION

My name is Brayant*, but ni-allow ni-keep my surname private. Mmekwa mkini-follow na kuni-investigate mabudaa but natambua ni wera yenu, wacha niwafunulie risto nzima juu sitaki mababe wanijue, sifa mbaya zii!!. Juu most of the times nimekwa nikiperuz ripoti zenu za investigation na vile tu mlini-call nikajua za forty zimefika. (You have been investigating me for a while but I have decided to tell you the whole story before you get out and even reveal my name. I have read you investigative reports on your site and daily publications and knew of you capabilities to have a grip on me.)”

The Legacy Investigative team for the past three months was following this story. A story of guys who are taking advantage of the innocent first years, the Freshers. After getting rumours of the happenings, our team planned an investigation into the allegations. Our first step was to get a victim and in a few days we got to meet Beatrice*, at first she was hesitant to talk with our team but after hours of persuasion and promises she gave in. For security reasons we had to meet at her friends residence, Kesses township. It was here that we also realized that her friend too had fallen victim of the said men.

Nimeamua kufanya interview yenu huku coz of privacy and nilikwa nataka mpate details mob juu pia beshte yangu ni victim. (I have decided to get interviewed at this place because I wanted you people to get more details from my friend who is also a victim” Beatrice told amid slight tears.
Beatrice's friend did not want her name revealed. She feared stigmization from her friends especially her male friends who she says may start mocking her. Her worry too was with her female friends who may spread the rumours and back bite her.

Mi ntaongea tu but sitawaambia jina yangu. Naogopa kujulikana na mabeshty wa mine kwanza maboy sitaki wani-sideline wakijua. Madem ndo worse coz wanaumbea mob na wanaeza ni-eat at my back. (I will just talk but won't reveal my names. I fear my friends especially the boys who may sideline me if they knew. The worst is if my female friends know because may backbite me)” Beatrice's friend expressed her worry.

It's here that we got to know some of the identities of the “hunters”, commonly referred to as  Team Mafisi. We decided to investigate one by one but came to realise that most of them had disappeared after getting what they wanted. Our investigations reveals that most of them are the cohorts waiting or already at their attachment stations. But after days, we got a tip off from another victim that she had sported one of them. Bettie* helped us locate the gentleman's residence. Our trusted sources revealed the guy was a third year currently on attachment. Brayant was the name he was widely known by his friends around the campus. Our efforts to know his full names hit rocks but he was confirmed to be a student at the School of Arts and Social Sciences.

We laid our traps but the guy seemed to have knowledge of what was going on. Our efforts seemed to sink into an ocean full of sand. It was during this period that one of us received a call from him. He started with what seemed to be threats but he was ably tamed after which he decided to voluntarily provide the information. He admitted of the doings and that he had once read an investigative report belonging to the legacy. This comrades is what transpired between the guy and the investigative team…...

How To Know If Your Partner Loves You (Part 1)

 By OMONDI Brenda

Falling in love is precious; it’s a jewel and almond. Everyone gets super excited to learn that they mean something to someone. Often, people are blinded by fear, frustration, beauty and money that they don't realize they are in the wrong relationships. To determine whether you are in a true relationship and your lover loves you back, you have to consider answering all the following questions with a sincere “yes":

1. DOES HE/SHE CREATES TIME FOR YOU?

Well, you got the answer with you. A true relationship is where both the partners have time for each other. Don't be fooled by excuses of being busy. No one is ever too busy for the other; it all depends on your position in the priority list. Consider minding if you are always the one to text first or call. Marvelous, you are in danger if you are a victim of such, run for your life and save yourself the heartbreak.

2. DOES HE/SHE RESPECT YOU?

Respect is paramount. You don't have to kill yourself looking for it. If someone loves you, he/she should show all elements of respect to you.

3. DOES HE/SHE SEEK YOUR OPINION WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING BIG DECISIONS?

If someone has chose you to be part of their life, he/she will always make sure you give a hand in making important decisions that affect his life. Consider thinking twice if you are always left out in making important decisions.

4. HAS HE/SHE MADE ANY SACRIFICE JUST TO MAKE YOU HAPPY?

He says he loves you, but his actions are not reflecting it. What are you still waiting for? An alarm? Well, if someone loves you he/she will do the littlest sacrifices just to prove it. Remember actions speak louder than words.

5. DOES HE/SHE LISTEN TO YOU WHEN YOU HAVE AN IMPORTANT CONVERSATION?

Listening is very essential, not only in relationship life but also in daily life. An effective communication is judged by interest; equally, the interest is judged by effective listening. If he/she doesn't listen or often considers his/her idea to be right, you are sinking in a pool of dirty water.

6. DOES HE/SHE BUILD A FUTURE WITH YOU?

Charity begins at home. Mere words can't prove that he will keep you forever. When he/she is making future plans and talks about " my future wife/husband or family" , just have it in mind that you are helping him/her push time. Stop wasting your time and effort, follow the right track or else you will be stacked.

7. DOES HE/SHE CARE ABOUT YOUR GOALS AND HELPING YOU ACHIEVE THEM?

He/she has never enquired about your goals. He doesn't know the struggle you are going through to achieve them. The main relationship goal is succeeding together, not buying matching watches and clothes and posting your relationship status in social media. Consider minding about that.

8. DOES HE KEEPS YOUR SECRET AND RESPECT YOUR PRIVACY.

A partner who truly loves you will not even share your secrets to his/her maternal parents. Now what of friends?  If he/she breaks your trust, don't be fooled that he/she will one day change. Trust is like a paper, once broken, it can't be returned to it's original state no matter the type of glue you use to mend it. Think wisely and make your own decisions.

9. DOES HE/SHE UNDERSTAND YOUR WEAKNESS AND ACCEPT THEM?

Someone who truly loves you will take his/her time to understand you in and out. Does he/she understand your weaknesses? Does he/she know how to deal with them? Well, if yes, you are truly loved, if no,  try and do something about it.

10. DOES HE/SHE RESPECT THOSE THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU?

To everyone on earth, family and friends form the basic pillars of life. Does he respect your family members and friends? A lady or a man who has the guts to raise his/her voice to his in-laws or partners friends in an arrogant way deserves a silent booting. Don’t even give him/her time to defend it; Make fewer announcements and more moves.

Watch out for part two....

Kadenge Shines At EAC Dialogues

By  OPANDA Tinah

The 5th East Africa Community Youth Dialogue which was held on 31st October to 4th November took place in Kigali Independent University, Rwanda. Over 3000      applicants had applied for the same but only a few made it. Among the qualifiers were 6 Kenyans, two from Moi University; Gibson Kadenge from Main Campus and   Opere Kelvin from School of Law (Annex). EAC consists of 6 countries, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan which was officially joined last month. All EAC countries were expected to attend but Burundi did not due to poor diplomatic relations with Rwanda.

This was an important event because EAC belongs to the people and it gives an opportunity to the youth to work and interact with members and EAC countries.

During the dialogue, Moi University was praised for their good job and acknowledged for representing Kenya well thanks to Kadenge and Opere.  Following the theme of the Dialogue, “The role of the Youth towards electoral        democracy” the two showed prowess in Youth and EAC integration.
The dialogue did not end in Kigali as Gibson Kadenge is set for the World Youth Conference which will be held in India from 12th-15th November. The theme of the

Kadenge takes this opportunity to promise comrades and the Youth at large to present Kenya well and encourages all youths especially Moi Varsity students to take advantage of such opportunities.

Gibson Kadenge

Conference is “Evaluating the role of the youth towards the achievement and realization of the global Agenda 2030” (Sustainable Development Goals).

Comrades Fail Ababu

 By The Legacy Investigative Team

On 4th November was a long awaited day for Moi University comrades to hear from the most radical, efficient, elegant,  intellectual, mentor, politician and father-Ababu Namwamba. The comrades particularly the forth years and the third years suspended their lectures to converge at the student centre for the event. The venue had been prepared earlier and chairs were well arranged for the same purpose. The security beefed up around the university premises following students unrest.

Then what happened? Our trusted source told The Legacy News Desk that the even t had to be cancelled but termed “post-poned” to calm the student unrest. It is said that the   students especially those aligned to the CORD coalition, ODM affiliate party had vowed to disrupt the meeting on what they termed “disrespect” accorded to the CORD principal, Rt. Hon Raila by the once trusted former  serving Sec. Gen of ODM Hon Ababu. The unrest was evident at the student centre and administration square where students had gathered and formed various “kamukunji” groups. Some groups were shouting and thus their intention to cause chaos during the meeting was easily noticed. One of the previous MUSO      directors (name withheld) joined the group but to ensure he was on the safe side, he had to advice the group to relocate away from the student centre, away from dean’s offices.

The event was part of Ababu’s public lecture themed “WHY NOT?”, a lecture theme targeting the Kenyan youth and the university being a youth centered zone he chose Moi          University as his first varsity public lecture. In all the lecture he attends he has a topic chosen to answer the question Why Not? and thus  “What is the problem with Kenya….”was planned for Moi. The students opposed to the selected topic pointed a finger referring to Ababu as the problem in Kenya. The report which The Legacy Investigative Team could verify is that Ababu was accused due to his stand and his unexpected resignation did not go well with ODM’s supporters. It was evident that they had well planned their intentions to disrupt, harass and throw tantrums during Ababu’s lecture. There was fear that Ababu could have talked about his current and future political ambitions which could “dilute’ the CORDS support in the institution and Eldoret as part.

Reports which The Legacy could not independently verify, that Hon Ababu Namwamba had arrived at the institution’s            administration block. He was briefed about the security situation that surrounded the whole planned event. It was here that the idea to call off the event was reached and without further       communications to the students especially to those who had    expected the lecture. Another source from West Campus told The Legacy that after his (Ababu) frustrated event in main     campus he held similar talks at the campus.

Was it right to plan to disrupt the public lecture? Have the youth especially university students fallen into the unlearned  population? Do the free public lectures by National figures and personality always talk about political moves? This are the    questions that intellectual and well informed comrades are asking their conscience as the answers cannot be found from the corrupted minds…..THINK!!!

The al-Shabaab has caused havoc in the country, with its sympathisers sneaking back and killing innocent civilians.

The latest was the attack in Mandera town where 12 people were brutally murdered in a hotel by the militants.
