UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI STUDENT LEADER BABU OWINO'S IMPRESIVE RESULTS

By JEMEDARI Mwanawakiume

There has been a discussion in Kenya on whether passing your exams really determines what you become. The answer depends on who you ask . Larry Madowo for instance, failed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). That did not stop him from becoming one of Kenya’s most sought after journalists.

Indeed, Kenya is littered with successful people who never made it in school. They were according to the system, failures.

Differing with Larry Madowo is University Of Nairobi student leader. Babu Owino. Babu who passed his exams feels that passing exams in Kenya is key to a better future. It is those few elements who cheat in exams who should be culled from the system.

Owino sat for his KCSE in 2005. He scored a A- of 79 points. His impressive results saw him clinch a spot at the University of Nairobi where he signed for a degree in actuarial science.

He aced his campus Education, getting a first class honors. He graduated in 2012. He went back to the university to study for a second degree in law.

“Exams are very important, it is a few crooks who water down their importance by engaging in malpractice,” Babu wrote on social media.

The discussion on the importance of exams has been spurred by the recent increase of exam malpractices. In the 2015 KCSE, the examination council reported a shocking 70% increase in cases of exam malpractice. More than 5,000 students had their results canceled.
