Laikipia University shut indefinitely

Three public universities have now been shut with two of them- Laikipia University and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology having been shut on Tuesday,April, 12.

Nakuru -Nyahururu highway was impassable for the better part of Tuesday morning as Laikipia University students engaged police in running battles with motorist and commuters bearing the brunt.

In less than two weeks, three public universities have been shut and the joke doing the rounds it that when Nairobi University- the oldest university in Kenya- sneezes, others catch a cold.

It has since been revealed that Biomedical and Biochemistry courses offered at Laikipia University have not been approved by the relevant national bodies.

“Following sustained students unrest at Laikipia University main campus, the senate has with immediate effect closed the university indefinitely,” said a memo from the university senate.

While Laikipia University senate did not give reasons as to why students rioted, information has it that students were increasingly becoming impatient as management failed to explain the status of the affected courses.

Nairobi university had students rioting after a controversial election process and Masinde Muliro University students rioted over a decision to bar students with fee balances from sitting exams.
