THE END OF BLACK WEEK: Riots In Moi University After Student is Found Dead

Moi University-Main Campus, was today a no-go-zone following student riots that erupted after a comrade was found dead on the morning of Friday, March 25.

The student many know as "Alcatel" or just "Catel" arrived in his friends room on the morning (at about 1 a.m) of Friday, March 25, with injuries which he attributed to an attack while he walked in the nearby Mabatini Shopping Centre.

His friends, who reside in a hostel outside the institution, thought the injuries were not too serious to need medical attention at the time and so invited him for a sleep over until dawn when he can access the university dispensary.

"Alcatel" who resides in C Houses, one of the halls of residence in Moi University which are poorly gated and it neighbours the surrounding village, could not wake on Friday morning and upon inquiry, his roommates were shocked to realize he had succumbed. They called the medical personnel for the dispensary who confirmed he had succumbed to the injuries.

The police delay to reach the site made the students irate. They picked the body and walked to the university dispensary where they took stretcher, carried the deceased body and started matching towards the Kesses police station to protest lack of security in the institution.

Police who had been alerted and arrived to collect the body were barred by the protesting students.

A confrontation ensued as police robbed teargas canisters and allegedly used live bullets to push the rioting students back to the campus.

The police are said to have followed the students into their hostels where they lobbed the teargas canisters.

The latest comes just a day after a villager was killed by the students along the university’s academic way on suspicions that he was a thief.

This is not the first time a student is found dead at the university. In 2015, a female student was found raped and brutally murdered near the university’s main stage, sparking massive riots that saw a police van torched and property destroyed.

The student, Charity Kimani, was known among many students as she a staunch christian in the Christian Union.

Bellow are images circulating online apparently showing how police who came to quell the riots used live bullets,  omething that seems to have angered thethe students even more.
